In 1927 Nungesser teamed up with the one eyed Coli, a veteran of the Great War and a pioneer in long distance flying, to attempt to cross the Atlantic. Nungesser was a legendary Great War pilot who scored 43 air victories while chasing women and boozing. In their aircraft the “White Bird” they left France heading for New York. They never made it. Two weeks after they disappeared Lindbergh successfully crossed the Atlantic.
